This hot rod was built by Al Eshenbaugh as his personal car. Eshenbaugh has a long history as a racer and car builder. He started drag racing in the late 1950’s and in the 60’s campaigned a series of Top Fuel dragsters with great success. (once the 9th ranked car in the nation). Al also competed in motocross and desert racing. Later while in his 70’s his attention turned to land speed racing and he built and drove a nitro burning roadster that set records. He also built a lakester that also was a record holder at Bonneville. He now builds blown nitro Chrysler hemi engines for and crew chiefs the Bass Kustoms Roadster that runs at Bonneville.
This 1932 Ford roadster was completed in 2010. The shakedown for the car was driving it to Pomona, California from Phoenix with the top down to display the car in the 46th Anniversary LA Roadster Show. The car has a 425 Cu In Buick Nailhead motor with three Rochestor carbs Built by Eshenbaugh. It has a TH400 Buick automatic transmission, same year as engine, 1967. The body is a Brookville steel body and it rides on ASC frame rails. The rear end is a 9″ Ford. Many of the components and pieces on the car were hand built by Eshenbaugh. The British Racing green Paint was just recently fully sanded and buffed, looks amazing. The pin striping on the trunk lid was done by Slo, who learned under the legendary painter Von Dutch. The air scoop was a gift to Al from Red Greth of Speed Sport Roadster fame. Greth’s scoops also ran on Chris Karamesines dragsters in the 60’s. The shift knob is a crystal door knob sourced from an old home in Phoenix that was being demolished. The steering column support is a connecting rod from a turbocharged Renault V6 motor that ran in the Gulf Mirage cars at LeMans. One of the mechanics at LeMans was an old drag racing friend from Phoenix and gifted the rod to Al. The dashboard and gauges are from an old Packard. It has domed Glass on the front of the Vintage Guide headlamps, the insides are modern bulbs.
The car is well sorted and ready to enjoy. Has a removable canvas top, no side windows. Very cool traditional Hot Rod built by a man with an amazing racing history, you know it was done right.
Here is a brief History of Steinegger & Eshenbaugh
Steinegger & Eshenbaugh was one of the oldest partnerships in automobile racing. Driver Al Eshenbaugh won his class and was the runner up at the 1958 NHRA Nationals in Top Eliminator in one of his very first drag races. Shortly thereafter, Al and Larry Steinegger formed a partnership that would see the two men racing together for more than 50 years.
S&E campaigned a series of top fuel dragsters in the 1960’s, ably driven by Eshenbaugh, that won an amazing number of races. They never shied away from tough competition and put Arizona on the drag racing map by being one of the first teams to tour nationally. They won 15 straight Top Fuel Eliminator titles in a row during the mid-60’s at BeeLine Dragway, the Arizona Fuel & Gas Championships, held the No. 9 spot on the Drag News Mr. Eliminator List, and were the Arizona State Champions in 1964 & 1965. Larry and Al stopped racing when rising costs got in the way of raising families, but stayed close to the sport by tuning, building, and crewing
on a variety of race cars.
In 2008 the two men built a Bonneville roadster to try to set a land speed record on the Salt. Larry sadly passed away before the car stretched its legs, but his son Jamie ably took his place. S&E set two World Records at Bonneville in 2009 (one while running the Hemi V8 on only 7 cylinders). The old school black nitro burning roadster has run over 250 miles an hour with then 71-year-old Al Eshenbaugh in the seat. The team recently set yet another land speed record at El Mirage in their
home-built Lakester running a unique 4-cylinder early Chrysler Hemi with long-time friend Ted Olson in the seat. S&E also restored one of their race-winning 1960’s fuel dragsters and the car participated in the inaugural California Hot Rod Reunion Cacklefest as one of the original 8 cars and was a regular at events
throughout the country.
Today Al, deep in his 80’s, builds old school Chrysler hemi engines for land speed cars and hot rod applications and serves on the crew of the Bass Kustoms Land Speed Roadster that just set a new record at 247.345MPH in D/BFR at the 2026 Speed Weeks. Larry and Al are members of the Arizona Motorsports Hall of Fame, the
Arizona. Drag Racing Hall of Fame, and were Honorees at the 2010 NHRA California Hot Rod Reunion. Al is also a life member of the Bonneville 200 MPH Club.
